During the summer Claremorris Leisure Centre held its annual swimathon in aid of Cancer Care West. All proceeds raised from this event went directly to the charity. Cancer Care West provides support to cancer patients and their families from all over the west of Ireland. All of Cancer Care West’s services are provided at no cost to patients and their families, so it relies greatly on charitable fundraising and donations to meet the cost and demand of these services.

Matt Bidwell of GCH made a winning first appearance at the final event in the 2016 Galway 5km series in Athenry on Tuesday.

Killeeneen National School will hold its third 5km Road Race on Thursday, June 16 . The 5km Race which is chip timed, will kick start at 7pm from the historical Liam Mellows 1916 Commemorative monument located in the heart of Killeeneen.

The launch has taken place of the seventh Annual Vodafone Mayo AC 5k series of five races. The 2016 series will start on Tuesday, May 24 and continue weekly on the following four Tuesdays, all at 8pm sharp. Mayo AC are delighted once again to have the sponsorship of Vodafone C&C Cellular for the Series. Brendan Chambers was on hand to launch the series and continues to give great support to athletics in the county. The series also serves as a major fundraiser for the club.

St James’ Ladies Football Club, in partnership with The Saving Grace Trust are holding their inaugural 5km road race/fun run on bank holiday Monday next May 2 at 11am.

One of the 5k races I ran in early summer was at Galway Airport. It was one of those rare nice Tuesday nights, when almost a thousand runners ran around the edges of  the runway, around and around, running one way towards Boston and then the other way towards Brussels — and when you are labouring up one length of the runway and then down the other end, you get a view of the place that only a few have ever had.  Normally you were only air-side of the terminal if you were embarking and disembarking. On this evening, we all had a privileged view of a facility that was crying out to be loved again.
